GOLD MEDAL WINNER - LIVING NOW AWARDS

Award-winning author, Tom North, is one of the eight North children, who together with the ten Beardsley children, became the family which was featured in the 1968 film, “Yours, Mine and Ours” starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, and again in the 2005 version starring Rene Russo and Dennis Quaid.

The book begins in the 1950s on Whidbey Island, Washington, where Tom’s mother, Helen North, became a widow when she was just 30 years old and pregnant with her eighth child. Tom was six years old, the fourth child in the
North family. Not long after, Helen North met and married Frank Beardsley, a man with ten children, and she moved her family to his house in Carmel, California. The North children were adopted and their names were changed to Beardsley. But, it wasn’t one big happy family as the movie depicted. The stepfather’s violence and abuse created a life of intimidation, confusion, turmoil, fear and depression for the North children. All hope seemed lost as Tom realized that he was caught in a prison and there was no way out. When he finally left home, he traveled on a journey of survival, self-discovery, and healing.

Years later, Tom miraculously led his family to counseling sessions where shocking truths were revealed. He then came full circle as he reclaimed his father’s name and was finally, True North.

Tom explains “My mission is to reach out to people who feel isolated, or misunderstood in the world and help them understand that they are not alone, and that their feelings may well be related to experiences they had in their early lives where they felt victimized by those who had greater power than they did. Those experiences may have caused great pain. I want people to understand they are not alone and that most everyone feels the same way. The more they experience their own divinity and essential nature, the more they will actually relate to humanity and see the beauty in
the world, and not the pain.”

TOM NORTH IS A FEATURED GUEST ON RADIO AND TELEVISION PROGRAMS, AND A KEYNOTE SPEAKER AT COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS, AND BOOK SIGNING EVENTS.

Sometimes entertaining and funny, sometimes serious, but always moving and inspiring, Tom North brings a fresh
approach to a very serious problem. Your audience will gain

• a better understanding of their own behavior
patterns that have resulted from their trauma.
• a new feeling of hope.
• a realization that they are not alone and that many
people feel the same way.
• a new inspiration to discover their own divinity,
their true essential nature, and their connectedness
to humanity and all life.
• an understanding of how and why their
connection to humanity is a necessary key to
their happiness and fulfillment.

True North The Shocking Truth about "Yours Mine and Ours" edition by Tom North Religion Spirituality eBooks

Those of us who are old enough to remember when everyone had seen "Yours, Mine, and Ours" (and younger children even played at being that family) would not have wanted 19 people in the house - but it made for the sort of comedy which appealed to 'family values,' and did contain a few insights from the 'wise' characters of the parents. I think that many of us realised the film was a comic adaptation, and that the book "Who Gets the Drumstick?" fit into the 'inspirational family' model which many authors (most much better ones than Helen North) used during the era. The passages I found most interesting in "True North" were those which gave some insight into Helen's reasons for marrying Frank - and for hiding what was truly going on within that household. They will seem bizarre - but those of us who knew a few 'martyrs' with religious dedication will not be totally shocked.
Catholics who remember the era will be saddened, but not surprised, that Tom's attempts to find help from a priest (in a parish where he was an altar boy) led to his being told he had sinned in speaking badly of his stepfather - and that the priest immediately telephoned Helen to report the 'sin.' It was tragic, in that era, that parents were 'always right' - and to speak ill of one's parents, even in grave situations, was against the commandment to 'honour.' That Tom found his spirituality elsewhere is understandable - and far healthier.
However, such insights are few. The majority of the book is about Tom's own pursuits - which are only mildly interesting. There is not terribly much about the other North children, and the Beardsley siblings seem vague.
Those looking for extensive information about the North-Beardsley family will not find terribly much here. The insights are fascinating, however sad, but they are scattered and rare.

True North The Shocking Truth about "Yours Mine and Ours" edition by Tom North Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

True North; A fascinating story about a not so average family, it was a real eye opener and page turner especially since I lived in Carmel at the same time in the same era. Tom's writing takes the reader back in time to a boyhood filled with twist and turns, ups and downs into his adult years and how he conquered his fears and overcame adversity thru enlightenment. Any book that the reader can relate to and grow from reading is a must have. This book is truly a must read.

I was very disappointed in this book. While I believe most of what he wrote is true I expected a much more in depth story about his childhood, parents, siblings and step siblings. Instead most of the book was basically just a rather boring auto-biography of his life. It seems somewhat obvious he wasn't able to talk about his Beardsley step-siblings and some of his North siblings for legal reasons so it was a very limited story of his childhood. The title of the book is rather misleading since most of the book was just about himself. If I had read some of these reviews before I bought the book I would have never purchased it.
I was expecting an interesting read about a family from my own home town. It is so much more of a book than that! Rich, full and totally mesmerizing!
I knew Frank and Helen Beardsley and found this account of abuse as experienced by Helen's son, Tom, to be extremely troubling on so many levels. Helen and I were approximately the same age so I know full well the age of denial within which she came of age. I also have some understanding of the religion which prompted folks to have too many children. I can only imagine the horrifying situation of being widowed at age thirty with eight children for whom to care. And, what desperation drove Helen to marry a man with ten children and to convince herself this would solve a problem. A concern I have is why so many mandated child abuse reporters who encountered this family turned a blind eye, including the pastoral counselor who did the family counselling.
Great
I found "True North" fascinating as I have both read his mother's "Who Gets the Drumstick" and seen both movie versions of "Yours, Mine and Ours." Tom North answers a lot of questions I had after reading his mother's book, mainly the question of How could there have been no conflict?" "True North" shows that yes, there was indeed conflict----abusive conflict. I give the book 3 stars because there was so much that could have been tightened or condensed. Still, "True North" is definitely worth the read. I recommended it to anyone who saw the movies or anyone who has survived abuse.
Truly an eyeing opening read. Loved the fact that Tom was strong enough to see his life needed to be to change and he made the changes that turned his life around.
