There really isn't any other purchase quite like buying a new-car.

That happy buyer you see driving off the lot may have paid 20 percent less than you will pay--for the exact same new car! For the typical $30,000 purchase price, that's a $6,000 difference, simply because of the buyer's knowledge, negotiating ability, and luck.

The typical experience is dreadful and often means spending three to four hours at the dealership after hours of research online. And just when you think it's over, you are ushered into the finance and insurance office, where you are urged to add on to your $30,000 purchase, just to make sure you are protected in the event of a mishap. The typical new-car buyer adds an additional $2,000 to $3,000 at this step alone!

Is this all really necessary? Is there a better way to buy?

In Power Shift, engineer and businessman Phil Kelton shares his recent experience buying a new car. While he enjoyed negotiating in businesses he understood, he dreaded the thought of negotiating a new car purchase without such pertinent information as the real dealer cost of a new car (they don't pay factory invoice), dealership overhead costs (efficient dealers can offer better prices), and dealership sales forecasts (successful dealers are paid bonuses per car sold).

So he developed a method that didn't require that information.

Fortunately, a new car is not a one-of-a-kind item; it's available from any franchise dealer. You may not know who the efficient and successful dealers are, but you can give them the opportunity to bubble up to the surface. You can shift the power back to you by taking two simple steps

1. Become car-buying ready (a hot prospect for dealers)

2. Write one e-mail and send it to multiple dealers within a reasonable driving distance

Step by step, Power Shift leads you through selecting your new car, understanding the cost, choosing financing, making the most of your trade-in, revealing what to expect in the finance and insurance office, finding and selecting dealers, writing your request e-mail, assessing dealer quotes, and picking up your new car.

Reliable, online information resources are provided for each step in the process. A car-buying ready checklist, e-mail templates, and examples are included.

There really is a better way to get a great deal on your next new car minus the stress, hassle, and negotiation. You already have the power, and Power Shift shows you how. Are you in the market for a new car? Stop dreading the experience and start enjoying your new-found power!

This book belongs in the fiction section. The disconnect between the advice in this book and the realities of current car buying is downright staggering. Here are just a few, in the hope of saving others the $8.99 I wasted:

Author myth: The author's one "big idea" is to just skip price research and "negotiating." Your magic strategy is to simply email nearly a dozen dealers listing the car you want and tell them you're having a bidding war. Tell them you'll accept the best offer and won't be negotiating, so they'd better make their first offer their best. They will all then magically email you prices thousands lower than you'd get on any car buying site, in awe of your brilliance.

Reality: No two cars have exactly the same options to the penny, and dealers like it that way. They are likely to reply to your email unicorn hunt by either 1) pointing to a "no haggle" price on a specific vehicle posted on their website, 2) giving you a tantalizing price with an invitation to call and come in-- noting that this is on a limited number of vehicles similar to what you want, or 3) sending you a pre-formatted email urging you to come in. What they will NOT do is waste time calculating a serious offer in response to a random email from somebody who has never been to the dealership, identified himself on the phone, or come to them through one of the many "buying services."

Author Myth: Sell your trade-in elsewhere, it only complicates the deal.

Reality: This is theoretically true if you have time to gussy your current ride up, take it to five dealers for appraisals, or deal with randos in a private sale. If you do this before you buy your new ride, just borrow your friend's Ferrari for a few days or weeks while waiting for your fabulous new car deal to come through. Or do it after you buy the new car. After all, it's not like there are people who need the funds from their trade-in to buy the new car. Just pay the difference our of your personal funds and float it!

Author Myth: If you donate your old car to charity, you'll get a great writeoff and serve humanity. This brilliance is accompanied by disclaimer to "check with your tax advisor."

Reality: You do not get to compute a deduction by looking up the value in a book. The donation world is also full of traps and scams. If you want to enter it, do so at your own risk. By all means, check with your "tax advisor," wealth management advisor, estate planning attorney, and private banker. He'll probably lend you his Ferrari while you're waiting on those cowering dealers to email you.

I could go on. But instead, I'll try to save you the purchase price and tell you the ONE thing this newbie author gets right: He lists the free sites that provide valuable information-- and you can see those by perusing the free "look inside" feature. You can also just type the words "car buying" in your favorite search engine and get a similar list. And finally...

Author Myth: Getting the best deal on a new car is simple and fun, if only you buy this brilliant book.

Reality: If only.

it's a deffo "must buy" if you wanna purchase a new car.
it enlightened me on so many aspects and saved me a lot of money.
awesome and useful book
The most clearly written, transparent and honest book about buying a car on the market! Carefully explained steps help make the purchase of a car a better experience for anyone. This book is a winner.
We used Power Shift by Phil Kelton for ideas to help us buy our new truck. Buying a car or truck is such a dreaded experience. With all the pressure of trying to get the right car for the right price, his book answered many questions we had concerning financing and warranties. The many charts and resources were very helpful. Obviously he spent many hours of research to write a book so full of information about the process of buying a new car in the age of technology.
This book can be read again and again and is truly a new no-stress way to buy a car.
I had heard about this book from a relative. I thought I always made a great deal when buying a car. I typically buy my cars but recently leased a car. I'm looking at getting a new car and read through chapters of Power Shift. The simple process of test driving but not negotiating or talking to a sales person about a deal at that time helped reduce stress. I followed Chapter 8 -- And sent out numerous emails to dealers to "bid". Simple process, less stress and going in knowing exactly what I wanted helped me get the car at a great deal. Easy to read, and step by step process made easier to buy a car.
Huge waste of my time. Did the research and every last step. I still did not get the price I needed. Wish I went with carwoo and saved myself the hassle.
